Support me in making a difference!
Thank you for supporting me as I begin my training for the hand-cycle event of SkyRise Chicago! As a hand-cyclist, I will cycle the same distance as if I were to climb 2,109 steps – 103 flights on November 6, 2016 at the WillisTower.
This race is dedicated to my mom, Florence Coakley who passed away this year. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be here today.
Thirty-three years ago, I sustained a C-7 complete spinal cord injury at the age of 24. Since then, my life has been a challenging and a surprisingly fulfilling journey. There have been many obstacles confronting me. I’m still climbing and I haven’t stopped. If it wasn’t for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and my family behind me, I would have given up a long time ago.
RIC has shown me many things – many that I didn’t know. Meeting people from all walks of life, from all over the country has shown me that we all have a common bond and need to lift our spirits and understand that everyone has a purpose. As a result, I developed a men's support group - "Men with a Purpose" - and work to help others to acheive their goals.
This will be my sixth year participating in SkyRise. Once again, my family, friends, and the RIC are pulling for me. Each revolution on my hand-cycle will represent one step. To finish, I need to complete 2,109 revolutions, with resistance, similar to stepping up stairs, but with my biceps & triceps. As a man with quadriplegia this will be extremely challenging. Since I have no grip, I’ll use my wrists firmly placed on the handles. I have been working hard every week to build my strength and stamina.
This event is pushing me outside of my comfort zone. RIC motivates me. I want to take this opportunity to support this great organization. Thank you for contributing to a very worthwhile cause and for helping me continue to show and acheive NEW ABILITY every day
"This one's for you Mom, I'll always love you!
